Caroll Spinney – The voice of Big Bird passed away at 85

The man behind both Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch — Caroll Spinney — has died at the age of 85. As both a puppeteer and a voice actor, Spinney defined not only two of the most beloved characters on Sesame Street but also influenced countless childhoods for the past five decades. In 2018, Spinney formally retired from Sesame Street, ending 49-years of continuous work.

His enormous talent and outsized heart were perfectly suited to playing the larger-than-life yellow bird who brought joy to generations of children and countless fans of all ages around the world, and his lovably cantankerous grouch gave us all permission to be cranky once in a while.
